Review of Stop Making Sense (1984) by John B — 11 Nov 2007
Probably the best concert movie of all time. Stop Making Sense captures Talking Heads at the height of their powers. They retired from live performance following this tour as they felt that they couldn't top it.
Demme wisely shoots the concert and nothing but the concert from the perspective of the audience. There are no interview segments or other off-stage shots. The film opens with David Byrne walking on stage and ends at the last song.
The direction never detracts from the performance, which is stellar. At the showing I saw when it was re-released, the audience applauded enthusiastically after every song. Brilliant!
