Review of Shakes the Clown (1991) by Richard D — 06 Nov 2016
Given Bobcat Goldthwait's recent critical success as a director, I thought I should check out his debut, which I had avoided up until now because it really sounds pretty idiotic. Yeah ... well ... it is pretty idiotic.
There's an idea here that is not bad, but it isn't really taken past the idea stage. It kinda clunks along without being actually funny, which is a problem for a comedy. Robin Williams appears and improvises for twice as long as he should .
.. and it's really not funny. Adam Sandler is in it, and it's better than almost everything he appeared in after this. It sounds like I hate this, but I don't. It's an amusing idea waiting for someone to fill it in with some jokes.
