Review of Papillon (1973) by Dave A — 28 Jun 2008
Perhaps one of the finest movies of Steve McQueen's career as it was drawing to a close. This highly underrated epic Hollywood dramatization follows the life of a real French criminal (played as an American by American McQueen) imprisoned on a notorious French prison island with piss poor living conditions and his repeated escapes alongside a fellow convict (an excellent Hoffman channeling 1950's Black List victim Dalton Trumbo).
This is one of the few movies of it's era to treat the material respectfully by not making it all Hollywood bullshit but really following the grim true to life nature of one's fate on an island where death is the only true escape.
