Review of New York, New York (1977) by Luke P — 01 Dec 2007
Martin Scorsese's musical ode to the films of the 40s, as well as the city he loves. Unfairly criticised as Scorsese's weakest work, New York, New York is actually a very good film, an excellent showcase for Liza Minelli's singing and method man Robert De Niro's acting (he learnt to play the saxophone for the role).
The film captures the fractious relationship of two people in love, but whose careers and aspirations are going in opposite directions. Powerful stuff.
