Review of Memories of Matsuko (2006) by Stephanie R — 29 Jun 2008
Wow, how can one movie be so perfect?
This film follows a woman named matsuko through her (short) life. Her story is one filled with pain, honor, and tragedy. We see her put her trust in scumbag after scumbag and fall into trap after trap, and struggle through it all while remaining just as pure.
One cannot help but feel depressed after this, which is a surprise considering all of the sugary, bright setpieces and lighting schemes.
This film has a cliched plot, but what it does with it is highly innovative, and the whole visual concept of the film is stunning. I can definitely say this is one of the best technical achievements (in cinema) to come out of japan lately.
This film has something very rare that not many other films have...high style AND high substance.
