Review of Major Dundee (1965) by Eric A — 06 Jul 2007
As a fan of movies that have had tortured production histories & went under the knife in the editing room, this is a goldmine. This was the first time Sam Peckinpah would run into that problem, and not the last.
While most of the cut footage was either destroyed or deteriorated over time, some of it was located & thankfully, put back in the movie. Parts of the narrative are much clearer now, and what's more, the extras contain more missing scenes, albeit in varying stages of completion.
Sam was one of the first directors to make a movie his way or the highway, but was ahead of his time on that count. Nowadays, he could probably make it the way he wanted it. As it is, with this improved edition, we can only wonder.
