Review of London Boulevard (2010) by Maria Z — 02 May 2011
I wasn't expecting a lot from London Boulevard, but came out at the other end pleasantly surprised. While the movie does have a few too many similarities with Layer Cake, it manages to use a superb sixties soundtrack and retro atmosphere to its advantage, and produce a thoroughly thrilling ride.
Telling the story of an ex con (Farrell) who is trying to make an honest go of things may sound a touch on the stereotypical side, but considering decent Brit gangster flicks don't come around very often I can forgive it for that one. Even Keira Knightley (who I can't say has ever been one of my favourite actresses) turns in a reasonable performance, depsite her usual lack of acting ability and breasts.
I thouroughly enjoyed London Boulevard, a bleak, often desolate ride for sure, but never anything less than utterly stylish.
