Review of La Ronde (1950) by Anne F — 21 Sep 2011
Beautifully lit, Ophuls adaptation of the Arthur Schnitzler play is a series of interlinking character driven vignettes which play out on some fantastic sets that simmer with sexual undertones throughout.
Anton Walbrook is great as the 'raconteur', our master of ceremonies who guides the audience through each scene with a nod and a wink to camera, constantly breaking 'The fourth wall'. Ophuls first film since returning back to Europe, having fled persecution under the Nazis to the U.
S, its a warm, stylish, sexually charged and playful piece, that's influence is clear.
