Review of Hated: GG Allin and The Murder Junkies (1993) by Colin Z — 26 Apr 2008
What can account for the emergence ofsomeone like G. G. Allin--a screeching punk-rock maniac who performed in the nude, assaulted his audience, maimed his body, and turned coprophagia into a badge of authenticity? A troubled childhood in Vermont? A serious psychological disorder? A pop culture milieu that ultimately thrives on making self-abasement into an art form? A Dionysian impulse to violate all social, religious, and physical boundaries to attain some sort of ecstatic release of the life force within? This documentary doesn't really come close to answering the question, but you certainly get a good dose of G.
G. in all of his vile intensity. I wouldn't recommend this to very many people, but it's still worth a look if you're in the mood for testing your endurance.
