Review of Wendy and Lucy (2008) by Colin Z — 19 Jan 2009
Wonderful companion piece to Old Joy although much more forced and full of cringe worthy scenes. Michelle Williams is too expressive to be the blank slate the movie demands. This is no Barry Lyndon, her character portrayal is almost more out of place than Tom Cruise in (Barf) the Last Samurai.
But despite this (albeit huge) distraction, the film works in projecting its politics. After Burn after Reading I am wondering if I am making a mistake in symptomatically reading too much into these film's takes on America's failed policies.
Perhaps aesthetically it works, but it makes you crave movies that are REALLY saying SOMETHING, political or not, even explicitly. Still its a thousand times more interesting than MILK.
