Review of Ghosts of Cité Soleil (2006) by Jim C — 05 Apr 2008
At times awe-inspiring and others utterly terrifying. close-ups of gang life (complete with almost laughable american rap idolisation) sit somewhat uneasily with newsreel footage as the haitian government of aristide tumble, in spite of the street gangs' attempt to enforce it.
While 'city of god' (arguably a similiar premise) seduces you with lush cinematography, good guys at the core and a glamourisation of slum life. this, on the other hand, is like pint of vodka on your cheeriosl; brutal, uncompromising and bleak but at all times, nothing short of compelling.
