Review of Charulata (1964) by Dhruba C — 03 Oct 2008
Ray is at the very top of my 'Favorite Filmmakers' list and this is his very best. The film is based on a Tagore novel; it's about a middle-aged intellectual, Bhupati, and his much younger cultured and erudite wife, Charulata.
Bhupati is distracted by his political and social work and neglects Charulata out of carelessness. Along comes Bhupati's younger cousin, Amal, who shares the same interests in the arts, in literature and in poetry, as Charulata.
Bhupati asks Amal to stay and spend some time with his lonely wife for whom he cannot make much time -- the stage is then set for a film that is restrained, nuanced, elegant, and inevitably tragic.
