Review of Captain America (1990) by Caleb M — 04 Jan 2012
This troubled adaptation of Captain America doesn't have big action set-pieces, top-notch effects or even A-list actors. The action scenes occasionally feel choppy and always look cheap, and for some strange reason, Cap's villain, The Red Skull, is Italian instead of German.
Still, for all it's technical flaws, this Captain America is pretty charming and certainly fun. Matt Salinger (yes, son of J.D.) does an admirable job as Steve Rogers (aka Captain America), bringing an earnestness to his performance that lends itself well to the character.
Though the action can get silly, Stephen Tolkin's script focuses more on the melancholic nature of Roger's awakening after being frozen in ice for 50 years, discovering the world has changed, his friends have passed away, and what it means to be a superhero.
