Review of Blue Velvet (1986) by Muhammad G — 24 Sep 2010
I love it, but I'm trying to figure out what could have been changed about the beginning of the movie. I get that he wants you to feel like it's a nice, small town then take you into the nightmare after you see the ear, but it just doesn't feel right until we meet Dorothy Vallens. This movie's visuals and acting are both perfect. Dennis Hopper was amazing and made me feel sick.
Edit: after watching this on the big screen at school I couldn't help but re-rate this. This is my favorite David Lynch film. It's crazy, but accessible. Funny and disturbing. The opening and closing of the film do a great job capturing the suburban feel so that you understand what the movie's about. It's like a twisted version of American Beauty. If you find an ear and think some crazy lady is a part of it, let it go. Ignorance is bliss, especially in this case.
