Review of Black Death (2010) by Al M — 29 May 2011
A stylish, beautifully shot, and entertaining medieval horror film that recalls The Wicker Man in certain ways and medieval witchhunt films (Witchfinder General, Mark of the Devil, The Devils, etc.) in others.
Unfortunately, Black Death never quite reaches the grandeur of those films. However, it is a well-made, atmospheric horror film with some genuinely brutal moments that explore the horrors and origins of plague and other natural tragedies.
Are they punishments from god or the work of the devil? Black Death mixes in such philosophical/religious reflections, but it never manages to develop those issues in a sophisticated fashion like Wicker Man does.
Still, Black Death remains an original, entertaining, and well-made horror film that will delight horror fans and fans of medieval period pieces.
