Review of Umberto D. (1952) by Andrew F — 12 Apr 2009
This is the greatest man-and-his-dog movie ever made. where other, similar movies lapse into sentimentalism, "umberto d" remains rooted in real emotions and genuine crises. the ending tugs on the heartstrings, but director vittorio de sica earns every bit of emotion he wrings from his viewers, by patiently developing the protagonist's character and his relationships with the other characters, dog and human alike.
this is a movie that doesn't make you feel ashamed for crying at it.
