Review of The Illusionist (2009) by Kevin K — 12 Feb 2011
A masterpiece. At first a gentle thing of beauty that slowly morphs into a near-wordless essay on aging, feeling incapable, and irrelevant. Can one still make a difference in the life of someone so full of youth, innocence, and wonder? When are you too old to impact the lives of others? When is it time to let go and move on? Sylvain Chomet has crafted a perfect film.
Simple, yet brilliant in the show don't tell way that the best films say the most by actually speaking the least, ending on a note both sweet and heartbreaking that moved me deeply.
