Review of The Brother from Another Planet (1984) by David S — 24 Sep 2010
Unique not-so-sci-fi movie that seeks to highlight the realities of urban life for the impoverished and marginalized. While it doesn't quite hit you over the head with metaphor or message, it also doesn't hold back from trying to tell it like it is.
The main character's muteness allows every other character to endlessly explain or complain about their day-to-day difficulties and trials. This is where the movie gets a bit tedious - as the audience, we are also thrust, whether we like it or not, into the role of the listener, and it can feel equal parts preachy and boring.
Despite this, the movie keeps the story going with clever, low-budget effects and novel concepts. I found myself enjoying the way in which the film was shot - it was a grainy, soft picture with warm tones, due as much to age and cost, I'm sure, as intention.
Nonetheless, it was to good effect.
