Review of The Brother from Another Planet (1984) by Aaron A — 05 Jun 2011
"There weren't any black people in my town. At least I don't think there were.".
Synopsis: A humanoid slave from another planet escapes to the mean streets of Harlem.
The Brother from Another Planet is terrific sci-fi, and it's themes are probably even more relevant now (with the whole hispanic immigration ordeal) than it was when it was first released in 1984. The picture uses a variety of minor character's to establish it's themes while at the same time providing a plethora of wonderfully dry humor.
Joe Morton plays "The Brother". his character is mute and therefore has no dialogue, but Morton is highly expressive here, and is probably a perfect example of the power of great acting.
With humanistic themes, a great performance, dry humor, and varied pacing, The Brother from Another Planet is terrific sci-fi.
