Review of The Broadway Melody (1929) by Min K — 10 Jun 2008
I was surprised how accessible this film to a modern watcher like myself. The pace is fast, humor is great and the acting has some raw, powerful moments unlike some of the dressed-up acting of the 40s/50s.
This film offers a compelling plot about the love of two sisters and the sacrifices they make for each other - an intense performance by Anita Page at the film's climax. It also offers a comical glimpse into stage life with lead actor fighting with lightman, composer fighting with conductor and all topped with a flamboyantly funny costume designer.
At times you'll wonder whether times have really changed all that much.
