Review of The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros (2005) by Marlon U — 06 Jul 2008
Though the blurb makes the movie sound completely cheesy, this is actually a serious movie. It is a coming-of-age film; however, the central character, Maximo, the 12-yo, isn't the only one that has to grow up.
What keeps you watching is that this is about family, struggle, and pain. Maximo is a fem kid who is comfortable with his identity. Victor, the policeman, is coming to terms w/ his moral identity as an upholder of justice.
The crush is a one-way street. And I'm glad the movie didn't venture into taboo. A kid having a crush on an adult? BIG DEAL... happens all the time. Right and wrong is blurred nicely. What won't a father do to keep his family together? Will a kid betray his family to his crush? Will the policeman take away the a family that loves him for who he is in the name of the law? There's reasons behind all of it, and the movie justly teases out those obscurities through the characters.
