Review of The Assassin (2015) by Philip H — 18 Feb 2017
Wow. Where to begin? This is a visually singular film, easily one of the most pleasing to the eye I've ever seen. The production design, cinematography, costumes, and landscape of China are absolutely gorgeous.
The film consists mostly of majestic scenes, both great and small, that bask in their subjects. The dialogue is sparse, and the precise action sequences are even more so, both more effective for their rarity.
The juxtaposition of the quiet scenes of 8th century life in China with the combat are riveting. I particularly enjoyed the monochrome beginning, and part of me would have liked to see the entire film shot in black and white, but there's just too much amazing color to see here, as well.
What a job well done by cinematographer Mark Lee Ping Bing. Again I say- Wow!
