Review of Slow West (2015) by Andy T — 27 Jun 2015
One of the most stunningly gorgeously astoundingly beautifully shot films of the year, for sure. Aside from the cinematography, Slow West provides a thrilling, darkly humorous and consistently engaging meander through the western genre, with welcome surrealist flourishes and some effortlessly excellent performances from McPhee and Fassbender.
This is a film ostensibly about desperation, though it's crammed full of some excellent ideas, with Maclean even finding space in its breezy running time to (rather bizarrely) rant about the culture of celebrity and fame.
A reinvented western that uses the tropes of the genre and makes them feel inexplicably renewed, Slow West is masterful, joyous, sporadically violent, often absurd and relentlessly admirable. One the best this year so far.
