Review of Querelle (1982) by Nikolai E — 25 Feb 2008
It's admirable just for it's sheer artifice. There are no accidents here. Nothing in this film exists that is not the result of human interference, from the laughable phallic architecture, to the apalling lighting, to the overwrought ADR and foley and unbelieveable dialogue and narration.
Everything is stilted, awkward, stagey, withdrawn, and soulless. It makes for a pretty awful film, but still, someone had to take the incredible time and effort to strangle every drop of life-blood out of this thing, one frame at a time, and he did a pretty damn thorough job.
