Review of Of Time and the City (2008) by Stephen C — 26 Sep 2010
Terence Davies pays homage to his beloved home town of Liverpool and if your expecting the Fab Four and Football then look elsewhere.
Davies never really GOT the Beatles and his waspish comments on them are rather funny even though I am a Beatles fan.
Davies instead concentrates of the Liverpool of his youth ,focusing on his love for Cinema and harking back to great days out and a world which was lost by the ugly concrete developments of the 60s.
Davies is extremley bitter towards this loss of community and the footage of Liverpools collaspse into heroin and no go areas of the 70s and Early 80s is more heartbreaking when you see what that replaced.
Davies Narrates with a cynical yet loving eye and he is hopeful towards the end of the film as he sees Liverpool rise again from the ashes.
Not for everyones taste but the use of old footage combined with music makes for a masterpiece from this countrys greatest directors .
