Review of Ninotchka (1939) by Anna S — 01 Nov 2009
This is such a great movie! The acting by Garbo and Douglass is top notch, and Garbo gets some hilarious one-liners! It does get melodramatic at times, but the melodrama doesn't hurt the movie as a whole.
There are so many great scenes, but I think one of my favourites has to be when Ninotchka is making an omlet for the three funny Russian men and each one of them brings an egg! That and the parts with the man at Ninotchka's appartment who just randomly walks in and out of the room.
The movie pokes fun at Russian customs and Communism (there's a smiling portrait of Lenin, a number of references to "togetherness", a focus on producion -- as opposed to spending, etc.), but it's all in good fun.
Plus, of course: "Garbo laughs!" All in all, a must-see.
