Review of L'Eclisse (1962) by Jason U — 13 Oct 2008
Part three of Antonioni's trilogy (L'Avventura, La Notte being the first two). There are some who would be dead bored watching this film, but that is missing the point. This is about alienation and the inability to create an existing, long term relationship in today's Monday world.
Antonioni continues his concentration on architecture and landscapes and their relationship to the individual. Vitti is incredible and Delon is, well, Delon. Worth seeing for the incredible silent montage at the end, which is beautiful as well as horrifying.
Antonioni will take this to the next level in color with Deserto Rosso. The Criterion edition is brilliant and worth having for the commentary track alone.
