Review of Kumaré (2012) by Jerem M — 12 Apr 2013
What starts out as a joke experiment a la Borat turns into a beautiful and touching, humanistic journey. Vikram Ghandi decides to pretend to be an Indian guru just to see if people (Americans) will believe and follow him.
They do, of course - or you wouldn't have a movie - but as Kumare, Ghandi comes to realize how he is actually affecting his subjects and grows to care about each one deeply. He also gets a sobering lesson about himself and his previous lack of real human connection.
None of it is mean-spirited but rather done in a tone of loving curiosity. And Ghandi does reveal himself by the end. Even a documentary attempting to expose false prophets becomes something spiritual in and of itself.
Don't miss it!
