Review of Golden Door (2006) by Phillip B — 24 May 2008
Easily one of the best movies of 2007. GOLDEN DOOR is like a feature-length version of the first scene in THERE WILL BE BLOOD in that there's very little dialogue, it's shot and edited exquisitely, and it deals with man (people, in this case) trying to better his life.
The scope of the film is epic -- Italian immigrants voyaging to the United States -- and yet completely intimate as we follow one particular family and a woman who crosses their path on the long journey.
There are startling images in this movie, a very specific and often times unexpected sense of humor, and a resonance that calls to mind our current immigration issues. For you film geeks out there, I can't recommend this movie highly enough.
