Review of Golden Door (2006) by Courtney B — 30 Dec 2008
Gorgeous, lyrical, very moving film about one family's journey from rural sicily to "nuovo mondo." vincenzo amato plays the hero, a supremely charming peasant who literally dreams about the promise of plenty in america.
the film's whimsy is tempered with utterly realistic tragedy. some images are incredibly and gorgeously and poignantly rendered (the ship leaving dock -- ugh!). charlotte gainsbourg is striking and mysterious, qualities she no doubt exudes in sleep.
the "making of" feature is also worth watching. director, emanuele crialese speaks articulately (in three or four languages) about the work he put into researching and developing the film...
and looking at the source photos, one sees how precise and accurate his vision was.
