This wouldn't be the first historical film to play fast and furious with the personal detail of lives of the main historical figures. Ok, so the romance between general bonner and Aya probably didn't happen, but it took away from some of the tension of the main question of the film.

...what to do about Emperor Hirohito after Japan's surrender in WW2....and the broader question of how to manage rebuilding and integrating into the post war world an ancient and proud culture. It wasn't perfect, but I don't regret watching it.

But then, again, I'm a history nut!
