I love this movie. I have seen it countless times. I've used it in my anthropology classes and the movie is a great instigator for discussions regarding immigration, ethnic relations and social class both in Central America and the USA.
There is a lot of symbolism in the movie and underlying messages. I think the 'just a pair of arms' message is powerful and unfortunatly often true.
