Review of Dracula (1958) by Aj V — 29 Oct 2010
The cormerstone of Hammer Studios' horror film oeuvre, the seminal Dracula film, featuring the first pairing of Horror Greats Christopher Lee as Count Dracula & Peter Cushing as his arch-nemesis, Dr.
Van Helsing. Dripping with Hammer's customary Gothic feel & surprisingly opulent production values, (Considering the legendarily-small budgets they usually operated under-) this is a ground-breaking work & pretty much cemented the two leads as the unrivalled Kings of the British Horror Film World.
Lee's Dracula is a rapaciously-vicious, jackal-like entity, full of swaggering, menacing sexuality, up against Cushing's intense, almost-acrobatic Van Helsing, the two responsible for forever changing the way these characters would be portrayed in future Dracula films.
A true classic.
