Review of Don McKay (2009) by J C — 20 Aug 2010
This movie seems improvised with the twists and dubious characters at the end. However, the plot is so ludicrous that it ultimately falls apart, but on reflection. The only way to enjoy this movie is to surrender to its charms and "whatever attitude.".
Thomas Haden Church looks 50, but wears his long hair like a teenager, and has a rock solid body of a man in his 20s. He was great in "Sideways" but it he doesn't really carry the movie. He's a spectator. Elizabeth Shue looks great and is not quite convincing as she transforms from victim to femme fatale. I actually liked Melissa Leo as the caretaker, Marie, and I didn't recognize her in the early scenes as the looks the part of a spinster. M. Emmet Walsh brings his dry humor to the role of the cab driver and Keith David does his supporting turn with "what the fuck?" attitude.
Not as bad as I initially thought but just not good enough to recommend it.
