Review of Contempt (1963) by Biswadip D — 06 Dec 2007
Probably the greatest film I have ever seen. It is a true artistic whole in the sense of being about everything - including itself (i.e. filmmaking). The photography and score are gorgeous and the opulent wealth of ideas explored - classicism and modernism, Europe and America, money and art, film and life - all emerge organically out of an earthy plot with the central scene being nothing more than an argument between a woman and a man in a flat.
And yet all of human life is contained in that scene!!
