Review of Chungking Express (1994) by Josh S — 27 Apr 2008
Umpteenth viewing of the film. I now find the first half in which a fatalistically romantic beat cop finds his life intertwining with a drug smuggler if only for a moment to be the more engrossing of the two.
Nothing can match the ecstasy of Faye Wong rocking out to 'California Dreamin'' but that section is a big too longuish and could be effectively truncated, a couple minutes trimmed making all the difference in the world.
Regardless, this is the real 90's work of Godardian effervescence, and coupled with 'Fallen Angels', leaves 'Pulp Fiction' in the dust.
