Review of Burnt by the Sun (1994) by T Wade Z — 13 Dec 2006
I was astonished by this movie.
Not when watching it, actually. But a few weeks after. I kept thinking about it every day. I just could not get rid of the scenes that were in my head.
And that romance "Utomlyonnoe solnce" which can be heard throughout the film (by the way, written in 1937; originally it was Polish) is amazing!!!
It is one of my favourite songs since now.
Mikhalkov and Menshikov probably have their best performances (for those, who have not seen Menshikov in "Pokrvskie vorota").
And I am very sorry that Mr Ebert did not see those things the Academy have seen! I am really sorry for him!!!
I would like to see a more dramatic, reasonable and professionally shot movie about pre-WWII years in Russia - I do not think personally there are any! It is a true masterpiece!
