Review of Bran Nue Dae (2009) by Melanie H — 02 Feb 2010
I am, of course, a proud supporter of Australian films. But yet again, Screen Australia has backed a film for all the wrong reasons, and it ultimately hasn't lived up to the hype.
The standout performances were from the ever faithful Geoffrey Rush & Ernie Dingo. But much of the film was flat and un-captivating.
This was an attempt and a heightened, theatrical & tongue in cheek portrayal of a time, place & people that holds cultural significance to Australia. Whilst some of the show tunes are toe tapping good - the indigenous propaganda is about as subtle as a government anti-smoking ad.
Needless to say, it is another step forward for Australian cinema, and hopefully Aussie films will finally start to hit their mark with audiences.
