Review of Bio Hunter (1995) by Jon-James H — 24 Jul 2012
Some nice hand drawn animation from the golden era of anime, but too infrequent to elevate the film to cult status. There's an emphasis on build up, and a weak, anticlimactic ending that only dampens an energetic plot.
Now this can be said about some of the greatest anime of all time, Ghost in the Shell being the obvious choice, but GITS' original plot and superb animation take it to that other level, that Bio Hunter only dreams of reaching.
The film tries to mix mysticism and science, without leaning strongly enough in either direction to be interesting. The same can be said of its brutality, that seems watered down for no apparent reason; being too strong for a PG13 and too non-threatening to interest a mature audience.
