Review of Billy Bathgate (1991) by Grant S — 30 Jan 2010
OK, but not great. Came away feeling "what was the point of that?". Interesting at times, distinctly bland and listness in others.
Could have been a decent biopic on Dutch Schultz, but spoiled by trying a make an unknown, and probably fictitious, character, Bill Bathgate, the centre of the movie. His character is dull and uninteresting, and played without conviction by Loren Dean.
Dustin Hoffman does well as Dutch Schultz, but that is not surprising. Nicole Kidman gives her usual so-so uninspiring-but-not-terrible performance.
