It may be lavish or anything you want, it's a delight to the eyes; but besides that... it's a piece of art, a disturbingly gorgeous piece of art about a piece of art.
There seem to be a lot of simbolism during the entire story, that connect the different elements and story lines to the main plot... Is love rational, what is rational in life? Making me think of that, is for me a good enough reason to watch the film.
The performances are great, I couldn't believe that the Anna laying in bed, was the same Anna I saw so in love with Vronsky; if that performance is not a leading lady bravura performance deserving of as many awards as there are, I don't know what would... Law's, Vikander's and Gleeson's are also superb; even Johnson's is not that bad...
Anna Karenina is an awesome piece of art, that will work only with select audiences, it's not the average film that everyone will love, it's perfect but in its own way.
