Review of '71 (2014) by Steven B — 02 Apr 2015
You might not get a chance to see this military/action flic because it is limited release. However if you do go by all means, it is as good as it gets. Not too many Old Geezers Who Go To The Matinee Alone, just very large Marge and Sullen Husband and lady in the incredible electric wheelchair; however she seems to buy a single ticket and then go to as many movies as she can before they catch her.
No big names in this and that really helps the authenticity. Jack O'Connell plays the young soldier who is the focus of the movie. It is about what is probably the dumbest 'war' in history; the Irish fighting the Irish and the English.
No one then or now can explain why people committed these atrocities against each other because one side was the 'wrong' kind of Christian. The film makers avoid any judgements here; all three sides are depicted in the worst light.
Not an easy movie to watch, but well worth your time and money.
