Review of Vera Drake (2004) by Timothy C — 11 Apr 2009
A masterpiece - pure and simple. A beautiful, heartbreaking work of art. Leigh is one of the most humane directors out there - and Staunton's performance is utterly devastating whether or not you agree with her decisions as a character (another remarkable thing about the film is that it is neither pro-, nor anti-abortion, only pointing out in the inequality of a government that allows women to get abortions only if they have enough money.
) The performances are masterful, small gestures take on immense power - and left me sobbing. This is a film that will always remain with me.
