Review of Umberto D. (1952) by Tony K — 21 Aug 2007
Umberto D is a fantastic film marking the end of the Italian neorealist period. Some things in the film are in fact far-fetched, but that doesn't stop De Sica from once again pulling us into the vitality of Roma and how people get shunted aside gradually.
It's moving, and the end is quite bittersweet, reminiscent of the restaurant scene from De Sica's own Bicycle Thieves.
