Review of Trouble in Paradise (1932) by Dickie L — 05 May 2009
Any film about con artists, from The Grifters to Dirty Rotten Scoundrels to Duplicity is measured against this 1932 benchmark, and there's a good reason for that - it's perfect.
The clever dialogue flows like honey and the three leads are so enjoyable to watch as they riff off each other. If you want to know what is meant by the Lubitsch touch, look no further than this, it's oh so light and sophisticated and because it was made before the era of the Hays Code of censorship, it's way sexier than anything made for decades to come.
An absolute delight.
My favourite line, "I have a confession to make. You like me. In fact, you're crazy about me".
