Review of Tristana (1970) by Phillip G — 24 Mar 2008
First rate Bunuel with Catherine Deneuve's stunning title character growing from a naive and innocent to a powerful, seductive amputee declaring a war of sexual politics and power on her aged mentor and lover.
Bunuel's usual surrealist touches are in evidence but the film is also rooted in a stark reality that brings home the cruelties and desperation of the central characters as they grapple for power and the right to choose their own destinies, despite the affects that it may have on each other.
