Review of Tideland (2005) by Kelly B — 24 Nov 2008
Oh the taboos!
This movie, I believe, has some controversy attached to it, but I think the film never asks us to accept everything in it to be ok. it merely follows the course of the story - completely in the present situation and completely through the eyes (and minds) of the characters.
It is a story about love and loss and... hanging on. a story in which no one is around to say, "this is wrong," or, "this is what should have happened." the only redeemer IS a child's imagination...
And...perhaps most importantly... a wonderful, blossoming friendship; I was very moved by the relationship jeliza-rose and dickens developed.
Having said that, it was also the first movie to give me nightmares in such a long time! it did take a while for the true meaning to sink in, and... for me to squash the barriers and be able to see more deeply into the meaning of this film.
Also, very beautiful, minimal scenery.
