Review of Thirteen Conversations About One Thing (2001) by Cris F — 10 Jun 2005
Someone reminded me about this film. I had seen it a few years ago in the theater and remembered really liking it. On my second viewing it still holds up. For those who like to ponder life's philosophical mysteries, you will enjoy this little gem. The dialogue is smart and the movie is slow paced as it explores that "one thing".
There are a number of story lines unfolding each focusing on a theme, but where the conversations interconnect is not obvious. My guess is the "one thing" they all relate to is everyone's desire to find happiness. But what is happiness? Is it luck like winning the lottery? Is feeling zestful or contentment towards life? Is it doing the right thing? Does happiness just happen to people, or do they have to make it happen in knowing how to find the silver lining in bad situations? Don't watch this one alone. You'll want to talk about it afterwards.
