Review of The Wicker Man (1973) by Tasha A — 10 Jul 2008
This is one of the classic British horror films - creepy beyond belief, building up suspense until the catharthic, explosive ending. Even if you've seen it before, it doesn't lose any of its power - the script is tight, the acting is superb. The only let-down for me is Britt Ekland's "Scottish" accent, but that's a minor thing. The interplay between Woodward and Lee is fabulous. I love Woodward's puritanical shock at everything non-Christian; he pulls it off well. However, it has to be Lee who is the star - he's the only person who could look scary when wearing a dress and dancing. The folk music throughout added to the disturbing feeling of "something's not right". The abrupt ending leaves you with no idea if the harvest is going to succeed the next year - and what will happen then??
A must for the collection, and one to watch over and over again. Brilliant work of genius, with a lot of oddball thrown in for good measure.
