Review of The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933) by Kevin H — 01 Apr 2008
It has some of the most beautifully constructed sequences I've ever seen, including what may be my favorite opening shot and one brilliant scene that unsettled me something terrible. Yet, it never seems uneven or poorly paced.
While there are a number of potentially rich interpretations, the aesthetic qualities simply overwhelm them. And it has the lovable Inspector "Tubby Lohmann", the Columbo of interwar Germany.
